Automated Code Review

Published on

Automated review finds repeatable patterns quickly; human review evaluates intent, architecture, abuse cases, and context. Neither replaces the other.

Useful checks

  • compiler, type, lint, and formatting checks for deterministic defects;
  • secret detection before credentials enter history;
  • static application security testing for language-aware vulnerability patterns;
  • software composition analysis for dependency inventory and known risk;
  • IaC and policy checks for exposure, identity, encryption, and ownership;
  • generated artifact and provenance verification.

Run fast, high-signal checks before merge and move expensive analysis later only when the feedback remains actionable. Establish a baseline for legacy findings instead of making a permanently ignored failing gate.

Every finding needs severity context, ownership, suppression with justification and expiry, and a way to verify remediation. Measure false-positive rate, time to triage, recurrence, and material defects found before and after release.

Reviewers should still ask what trust boundary changed, which authorization is enforced, how sensitive data moves, what can fail open, and whether rollback or recovery remains safe.
